Work Title: Neriya Kanaya
2022 | Photography
"Neriyakanaya" is one of the concepts of the afterlife that is passed down throughout the Ryukyu Islands. It is an utopia beyond the eastern sea where gods live. In Ryukyu Shinto, it is said to be a place where souls return and are reborn. It was believed that the sun rises over this sea, sets in the western sea, and then rises again through the underwater or underground afterlife.
