The "sanen" is a precious plant from the ginger family that has been cherished in Amami Oshima for a long time, growing only in subtropical regions. On the mainland, it is called "gettou". The leaves are popular in Amami for wrapping rice dumplings and rice balls due to their insect-repelling, antifungal, preservative, and antibacterial properties. It is said to be a plant that aligns with the rhythms of women, associated with purification, regeneration, and circulation, possessing the power of the moon's phases and having healing effects. Sanen also grows naturally on the grounds of the Ryukyu Villa.
