結(yui)

結 (yui)

Exhibition location: Sōtetsu building
Work title: 結(Yui)
2022, Stained glass

Stained glass installed as a ground-level window(Ji-mado) on the wall of a Japanese-style room.

The motif "knot(Yui/結)" physically means to tie or connect, but in the Ryukyu area, such as Amami Oshima, it means "the residents of a small village helping and cooperating with each other." Amami Oshima is said to be "an island where the spirit of Yui/結 lives on," and the spirit of mutual aid has been deeply rooted since ancient times.
